Crewe midfielder Ashley Westwood has been rewarded for his fine recent form with a new contract that will keep him at the Alexandra Stadium until 2012.

Westwood, 19, has been a regular in the side since Dario Gradi took caretaker charge of the team in October.

"It is good for my confidence to know that Dario and the club have faith in me," he told the official club website.

"All I ever wanted to do when I was younger was to play for Crewe and now that I am it is a real buzz."

Westwood, who has also played at full-back for the Alex, scored his first senior goal against Chesterfield on Wednesday.

He made two substitute appearances at the end of the 2008/09 season and made his first start in a Carling Cup tie against Blackpool in August.

In all, he has made 14 starts for the club.
