O'Donnell was a product of the youth academy at Liverpool
Defender Danny O'Donnell admits he is playing for his Crewe future after returning to the starting line-up against Morecambe on Saturday.
He told BBC Radio Stoke: "My fortunes have been similar to the team's fortunes in many respects. But there's been a lot of support from everyone.
"You have to take your chance. My contract is up at the end of the season and it's the nature of the business."
The 23-year-old made his first start since 24 September in the 2-1 defeat.
Crewe were booed off after their ninth defeat in 11 matches and the former Liverpool defender said supporters had every right to vent their frustrations.
"They pay good money to come and watch us play," he said.
"Like any group of supporters, they feed off the team and the team feed off them. It's down to us to produce for them.
"The fans can see that we're more than capable of performing. If we manage to perform more consistently, we're more than capable of doing a lot better."
Crewe are 18th in League Two and are next in action on Saturday when they visit Northampton.
Right-back John Brayford is expected to be fit for the trip to Sixfields, despite being forced off against Morecambe with a shoulder injury.
