O'Donnell (r) has started in 18 League One games for Crewe this season

Crewe Alexandra defender Danny O'Donnell has admitted it hurt to be dropped when new manager Gudjon Thordarson arrived.

Thordarson decided to recall Julian Baudet after injury at the expense of the former Liverpool trainee.

O'Donnell told BBC Radio Stoke: "I was disappointed to be left out, but I have overcome setbacks before."

The 22-year-old has since regained his place in the team because of an ankle injury to Dennis Lawrence.

O'Donnell joined Crewe in 2007 for 100,000 from Liverpool but he has only made 37 league appearances.

He said: "I will always give my best for the club and I am enjoying the challenge of trying to prove myself to the new manager."

O'Donnell came off the substitutes bench to score the injury-time winner in 3-2 win over play-off chasing Scunthorpe United at the Alexandra Stadium on Saturday.
