Groin injury could sideline Zola

Calvin Zola
Top scorer Calvin Zola has scored 10 goals for the Alex so far this season

Crewe top scorer Calvin Zola will be assessed by the club's medical staff after picking up a groin injury in Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Port Vale.

Zola, who has netted 10 times for the Alex this season, limped off after 40 minutes at the Alexandra Stadium.

"I've no idea what happened. He was running one minute and then not the next," caretaker manager Dario Gradi admitted to BBC Radio Stoke.

"If you get injured that easily, then I think we might have a problem."

But, while Gradi sweats on Zola's fitness, he has been boosted by the news that striker Clayton Donaldson is nearing a first-team comeback after almost two months out with a broken leg.

"He's a good player," coach Neil Baker told BBC Radio Stoke. "And I don't think we've quite seen the best of him here.

"He's done well on the wing, but his preferred position and his strength is playing down the middle.

"We'll have a little bit of competition up there when he's fit again and that will only help the team."

Defeat in the local derby by Vale leaves Crewe 16th in League Two, having lost six of their last seven matches.
