Alex defender targets clean sheet

Broomes has made one appearance for parent club Blackpool this season

Crewe Alexandra defender Marlon Broomes says his objective for Tuesday's trip to Southend is to keep the team's first clean sheet of 2009.

The Alex have the worst defensive record in League One, conceding 60 goals in 28 matches this season.

Broomes told BBC Radio Stoke: "I would be more worried about us if we weren't creating anything going forward.

"We need to be a bit more solid, so that if we don't score a goal, we at least don't concede and get a point."

Broomes has made three appearances for Crewe since joining on loan for a month from Blackpool in January, and he would like to extend that deal until at least the end of the season.

The 31-year-old added: "The lads have been fantastic and made me feel very welcome. I'm really enjoying my time here.

"I just hope we can get out of this trouble that we're in at the moment so I can be even happier.

"After this loan spell, if the manager wants me to stay I would be more than happy to."
