Evans plays down promotion hopes

Crawley Town

Crawley boss Steve Evans believes the changing landscape of the Blue Square Premier will make promotion difficult.

The Reds, who flirted with the play-offs last season, are in 11th place after the 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon.

"We're going to find it very difficult [to reach the play-offs]," the Crawley boss told BBC Sussex.

"We have to try and offer something different to the big boys or perhaps dare I say it, take the players they don't want."

He added: "You have to be careful that you don't slip into the bottom division and try your best to get into that little top pack.

"That will prove very difficult with all the big clubs over 46 to get into that part.

If people think that Wimbledon are going to go into the play-offs and get promoted then they need to go and see a shrink

Crawley boss Steve Evans

"Therefore you need to ensure that, when you come against the teams in the middle and bottom groups, that you win the majority of points because that keeps you in the middle group, maybe with a little sniff of making the top group.

"That's not rocket science but it really is where the Conference has gone to today, there's extremities. AFC Wimbledon don't pay huge money, I know they don't and we don't.

"If people here have any grandeurs or think that Wimbledon are going to go into the play-offs and get promoted then they need to go and see a shrink, they're not going to do it either."
