O'Donovan's last first-team game for Coventry was in January
Coventry City were pegged back by an injury-time equaliser as they drew 2-2 with Nuneaton Town in their opening pre-season friendly.
A brace from the Sky Blues second-half substitute Roy O'Donovan had looked enough to claim the win at Liberty Way.
But Boro's recent signing Danny Glover netted at the death to ensure honours were even in the local derby.
Another new arrival Lee Smith had given the home side the lead in the opening 45 minutes.
City manager Andy Thorn felt there were plenty of positives to take away from the game, including the goals from O'Donovan.
The striker managed just four appearances last season, with his only start coming in the Carling Cup first-round defeat at Morecambe.
Thorn told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "He never had a chance last year and it was difficult when I came in because the opportunity never came for him to play.
"But at the moment there's an opportunity and he certainly took his opportunity with both hands."
Nuneaton manager Kevin Wilkin was full of praise for his new goalscorers.
Wilkin said: "The pair have done pretty well so far. It's very early days but both have got goals now.
"We'll just be working on the things through the course of the week. There are areas that we're not quite right at but so far so good."
