Colchester United manager Aidy Boothroyd is planning talks with Pat Baldwin about his future at the club.
The 27-year-old defender has been on loan with Bristol Rovers but is due to return to the U's in the new year as they push for promotion.
"Pat has been here a long time and maybe it's the right time for him to move," Boothroyd told BBC Essex.
"But until I've sat down and talked to him I can't really tell you which way we're going with it," he added.
Baldwin only signed a new three-year contract with Colchester in the summer and was captaining the team until injury saw him drop out of the side.
"I now have Magnus Okuonghae, Paul Reid, Danny Batth and Matt Heath who're all really good central defenders so Pat is fifth in line," said Boothroyd.
Colchester signed Pat Baldwin from Chelsea in 2002 and he has made more than 200 appearances.
