Peruvian international Solano scored 54 goals in the Premier League
Nolberto Solano is training with Colchester as boss Aidy Boothroyd weighs up a move for the former Newcastle and Aston Villa midfielder.
The 35-year-old, who plays for Peruvian champions Universitario de Deportes, joined up with the U's this week.
Solano made more than 250 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, Villa and West Ham between 1998 and 2008.
Boothroyd told BBC Essex: "We can attract players like Nobby now, we'll see how it pans out."
He added: "I tried to sign him for Watford but he went off to America.
"He now plays for a team in Peru who have just won the championship there and I asked him to come over and see if he's still got what he had and to see if he likes us.
"I suppose it is a bit of a date that we're having at the moment. As is usually the case you don't get married on a first date, you've got to go out a few times before you make any big decisions."
