Colchester United captain Dean Hammond admitted the players had let themselves down at Scunthorpe on Saturday.
Defensive errors contributed to the 3-0 defeat which practically ended any hopes they had of making it into the League One play-offs.
Hammond told BBC Essex: "We're the ones out there playing, it's not down to anyone else.
"As a team we've got to defend better, they were silly mistakes that shouldn't happen at this level, but it has."
Manager Paul Lambert kept his team in their dressing room for over 30 minutes after the game on Saturday and also had them back in training on Sunday.
Hammond accepted their performance at Glanford Park was not up to scratch.
"Half-time was hard to take being 1-0 down, because we should probably have been 2-0 up, but we made a sloppy mistake at the back," he admitted.
"But we also didn't take our chances and there were mistakes all round from us."
The U's are now 13th in League One and 13 points from Scunthorpe, who occupy the final play-off spot.
