A combination of rain and bad light meant only 23 completed overs were possible on day two at Chelmsford.

After rain had delayed the start, Derbyshire could only add 20 runs to their overnight score of 306-7, with Graham Wagg remaining undefeated on 24.

Chris Wright clean bowled Tom Lungley and Ian Hunter to finish with figures of 4-86.

Essex openers Jason Gallian (7) and Varun Chopra (16) shared an unbroken stand of 29 before the light closed in.
