Hackney played 30 minutes for the U's 2-1 defeat of Northampton
Colchester boss Paul Lambert is hopeful new signing Simon Hackney will prove to be an exciting addition to his squad.
The 24-year-old winger made his debut as a substitute against Northampton on Tuesday, after signing from Carlisle for an undisclosed fee.
Lambert told BBC Essex: "He hasn't played for a few weeks but in the short time he was on he did great.
"He will be direct for us and he's exciting to the eye and I thought we needed a bit of help down that side."
He added: "You're never quite sure if people will come in to the building and hit the ground running, but he only came down on Monday, didn't really know anybody but as I said, he did great."
