Lambert greatly impressed the board during his interview
Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling has said new manager Paul Lambert was "the best candidate for the job".
Lambert was announced as U's boss on Thursday and will start work after Saturday's game at Cheltenham.
"He was the best candidate for the job and that was unanimous amongst all the board members," Cowling told BBC Essex.
"He talks a lot about winning and by the end of the interview we were quite convinced that if he comes to the club we're going to start winning games."
Cowling added: "We came away thinking he was the person most likely to do that and also give the players the belief."
Cowling said the position of Geraint Williams' successor had proved to be a popular one.
"There was a massive interest, I think in the end there was probably just under 100 CV's received and some really high quality ones.
"We ended up interviewing, face-to-face, four people and I think three of the ones we interviewed definitely would have done a great job for us."
