Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker wants new wage structure

Cheltenham Town chairman Paul Baker is planning a better structure to the club's playing budget next season.

The Robins have just two players signed on for 2010-11, having made offers to only six of the squad who escaped the drop from League Two under Mark Yates.

"Essentially the manager has a free hand to sign who he wants," said Baker.

"But we do get involved in the contract detail to make sure we don't commit ourselves to anything unsustainable going forward."

Baker wants to put an end to some players being on twice as much money as others in the wage structure.

He does acknowledge that certain positions, especially strikers, generally command better wages than others. But he feels that the club can still keep hidden costs to a minimum.

"It's caused us problems in the past when you're signing up to stuff," he told BBC Radio Gloucestershire, "whether it's long term deals, signing on fees or re-locations."

"All these things add up, so we're going to be particularly careful and particularly tight on all those additional costs."
