Cheltenham move still on - Baker

Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker says plans for the club to relocate to the town's famous racecourse are still on.

Baker told BBC Gloucestershire: "We've got another meeting next week. The racecourse have some exciting ideas.

"We can't go on with people bailing the club out. If we want to be in League One we need alternative revenues.

The idea, mooted after winds damaged the festival's tented village in 2008, is for a stand facing both towards the track and the proposed new stadium.

Racecourse managing director Edward Gillespie told BBC Gloucestershire: "This is still a long game. It's important that we get the council to understand and hopefully support the idea, which can move move both businesses forward.

"We've kept our lines of communication open, but property values are important when it comes to realising the potential value of Whaddon Road.

"Cheltenham is very innovative and has a record of making things happen. I think it will be a slow process but could it happen in 10-to-15 years, yes it could."

Cheltenham Town had a scheme lined up to develop the main stand side of Whaddon Road in before the collapse in the property market, and chairman Paul Baker says staying put is still a consideration.

"We want to be sustainable. Crowds of 3,500 can support a League Two side, but not a League One side. We cannot survive on football alone."

"We have a 97-year lease from the council, and around the plot there is land you can do things with.

"We could redevelop the main stand, add an extra floor and generate money that way. The big question is how does relocation or redevelopment add revenue."
