Allen's Cheltenham struggled at the wrong end of League One all season

Cheltenham boss Martin Allen will do a 76-mile sponsored bike ride to raise money for the club on Sunday, 2 August.

The Robins were relegated from League One after a challenging campaign and Allen has decided to help boost the coffers ahead of the new season.

After a "fantastic response" from fans to his plan Allen aims to roll into Whaddon Road in time for that day's pre-season friendly against Birmingham.

Allen raised more than £15,000 for Brentford when he was the Bees boss.

But the route on that occasion was a mere 25 miles from his home in Maidenhead, compared to this trip which will set off from the same venue taking in Henley and Oxford en route to Cheltenham.

"There's been a fantastic response," the 43-year-old Allen told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"I opened it up to everybody to see what their feelings were. I'm aware of the current financial climate and I wanted to see if our supporters would buy into it.

"We've got to raise as much money as we can and hopefully put that towards getting better players into the club."

When Allen completed his sponsored cycle for Brentford, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson donated £500 to the cause.
