Cheltenham Town striker Elvis Hammond may miss the rest of the season because of an ankle injury.
A similar injury kept Hammond out of football for more than a year and the 28-year-old is now facing surgery.
Cheltenham manager Martin Allen told BBC Gloucestershire: "It's a tidy-up and not long term. As far as I know it's just to have a screw taken out.
"It's better to get it done now so he can train through the summer than wait until the end of the season."
Hammond signed a short-term contract at Whaddon Road before Christmas and subsequently earned himself a deal until the summer of 2010.
The former Leicester and Fulham man has so far scored five goals in 22 league appearances for the League One strugglers.
Allen added: "Elvis could have the operation as early as next week, but we need to make sure we are doing exactly the right thing.
"We don't think it is his old injury. We're still reviewing the medical records because they have been difficult to get hold of.
"To get the best out of him, he'll need to train in the off-season and come back and have a good pre-season."
