Ian Saxelby hit an unbeaten 54 off 77 deliveries to put a gloss on what had been a disappointing opening day's play for Gloucestershire.

Northamptonshire had the visitors at 213-7 after taking James Franklin and Stephen Snell in the 73rd over.

The home side's bowlers had enjoyed some reward until Saxleby took the crease with Steven Wigley taking 4-48.

But Monty Panesar may have failed to impress the England selectors after 13 wicketless overs went for 49 runs.
