Downing defends Boulding interest

Michael and Rory Boulding

Cheltenham manager Keith Downing has defended his interest in free-agents Michael Boulding and his brother Rory.

Elder sibling Michael, 32, scored 21 goals for League Two Mansfield last season but Downing says 19-year-old Rory would also be a good signing.

"He has raw potential and plays either up front or on the left," Downing told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"It is not the fact that Rory would only be coming here for the sake of his brother Michael."

Downing says that Michael will train with Cheltenham on Monday and Tuesday.

"I know from Michael's intentions that it would be great for him and his brother to come down but that isn't the way the deal has been worked out," added Downing.

"I think the fact that he is here for more talks shows we does have the potential to get people in. "Michael had a fantastic offer from Bradford City, but he's prepared to move from his home in Sheffield and play in League One for Cheltenham."
