Rotherham United manager Mark Robins has said he has not given up trying to sign former Grimsby, Aston Villa and Mansfield forward Michael Boulding.
The Millers face stiff competition from a number of League One clubs for Boulding, who has also trained with League Two rivals Bradford City.
"I'm still hopeful of doing something with Michael, I won't give up on that," Robins told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"I think he could help us out a lot but I think we could help him too."
Boulding has trained with the South Yorkshire club following his departure from Mansfield, who were relegated from the Football League.
However the 32-year-old has taken his time to weigh up his options with numerous clubs, including Cheltenham, in the hunt for him.
A lot could depend on how many points the Millers are deducted by the Football League for failing to gain a Company Voluntary Arrangement.
A major deduction could kill of the club's promotion hopes even before the start of the season.
Robins added: "I'm looking forward to concluding it and hopefully in the right way."
