Steve Kirby has ended speculation about his future by signing a new long-term contract at Gloucestershire.

Kirby, 30, described the decision to turn down offers from other counties as the toughest of his life.

"My family are settled in Bristol and the other major factor has been the appointment of John Bracewell as director of cricket.

"I am still massively ambitious to play for England and I feel he can help me continue to improve."

The former Leicestershire and Yorkshire fast-bowler is in his fourth year at Nevil Road.

County chief executive Tom Richardson was pleased to tie Kirby to a deal, a day after all-rounder Alex Gidman signed a new three-year contract.

"Steve had bowled very well for the club, it is really good that he is continuing with us.

"He is an integral and very important part of the club as we move forward, and we are delighted he has pledged his future with us."

New Zealand coach Bracewell has agreed to return to Bristol in April 2009.
