Carlisle United have signed United States international defender Frank Simek on a two-year contract following his release by Sheffield Wednesday.

The 25-year-old came through the ranks at Arsenal before joining the Owls in July 2005, going on to make 130 first-team appearances.

Boss Greg Abbott told the club website: "Frank is exactly the type of player that we have been looking for.

"He is full of energy and he has played at high levels."

Simek said: "I had a couple of conversations with the manager and I like the things that I heard, so it took very little time for me to come to a decision.

"This is a club with a good reputation and I know from conversations with people that I know that they want to play football.

"The gaffer has spoken about improvement and the fact he wants to be pushing up the table, and I am looking forward to being a part of that."
