Carlisle midfielder Gavin Rothery has returned from a loan spell with Blue Square Premier side Barrow because of a suspected groin injury.
Rothery, 22, made just four appearances for the Bluebirds, all as a substitute, and featured in the FA Cup games against Sunderland and Oxford.
United boss Greg Abbott said: "We will seek further advice from our specialist so we can find out what's going on.
"Once we know the extent of the problem we can then take it from there."
