Defender Josh Gowling has said Carlisle United manager John Ward has already had a big influence on his career.

The 24-year-old defender joined the Cumbrians on a free transfer from League Two side Bournemouth in June under the Bosman ruling.

"John Ward is a great manager," Gowling told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"I've learned so much more from him in such a short space of time and I'm just looking forward to keep on learning from him."

Gowling made 43 appearances for the Cherries last season and played against Carlisle on the final day of the season in a game that saw Kevin Bond's team relegated to League Two.

"Obviously I've been up to Brunton Park a number of times and it's just a great place to come," Gowling said.

"It's a tight-knit group of lads, obviously you are a bit nervous when you first join a new club but I've settled in nicely.

"I've just found myself a flat and the lads have made me feel really welcome," he added.

Gowling, who turned down the offer of a new contract with Bournemouth in the summer, said he has been impressed by the team spirit at his new club.

"The gaffer wants players who are winners and who never give up, that's what we've got here."
