Blake tells McCormack to stay put

Scotland's McCormack has been linked with a move to Hull City

Ex-Cardiff City striker Nathan Blake says Ross McCormack should stay with the Bluebirds but believes Paul Parry could benefit from a move away.

Blake admits to being surprised to learn Scotland striker McCormack is unsettled by fears of being sidelined.

"I'd say to him [McCormack] 'take a little time, think about your decision and look to stay at Cardiff, probably another season, maybe two'."

But Blake says Preston target Parry's situation is entirely different.

He said of Parry: "Sometimes when you're a local lad it takes a move away... just to refresh everything."

McCormack has been linked with a move to Hull and expressed concerns about potentially limited playing opportunities damaging his international career.

"If Ross went from Cardiff to Hull, there's still going to be competition for places. There's never a guarantee that you're going to play," added Blake.

"Just because you're a new signing, you might get a run of eight games, but if it's not going well, if you don't score, if you're not performing in eight games, then you find yourself on the bench and maybe outside the squad.

"So the same problems face players wherever they play and whoever they play for.

"So whether it's competition at Cardiff or competition at the likes of Hull, which everyone knows is being talked about, players have to fight for their positions. It's as simple as that.

"If he decides to go, if it's what he wants then as a manager it's difficult to stand in the player's way.

I would have seen him as probably one of three of the first choices to play up front

"You can try and convince him that this is the best place for him, he's had a successful season last season.

"The general idea from a player's point of view is to follow that up with another successful season so it's not seen as a flash in the pan, you're seen as a player who has a consistency across the board.

"So for Ross and for the manager at Cardiff, Dave Jones, they should really sit down and go over what the problem is. It just seems to have come out of the blue.

"I was surprised [at McCormack talking of leaving] along with many other people because I would have seen him as probably one of three of the first choices to play up front and if not then definitely playing wide."

Blake says Parry, 28, has yet to fulfil his potential and could benefit from a switch.

"I'm not so sure with Paul. It's a difficult one, really because he's a talented boy, a very talented boy," he added. "But I don't think he's fulfilled his potential at Cardiff."
