Jones sees Koumas as a crucial part of Cardiff's future

"I came in nine months ago and everything was pretty much set, now I have my own targets and I have to see what I can get," Jones told BBC Sport.

"A lot of players are out of contract and I'm still trying to tie up the on-loan Glenn Loovens and Jason Koumas.

"Some people have to be sold to get cash to move forward. I'm not the only one doing this - every manager is."

Wales midfielder Koumas, 26 - on a season-long loan from West Brom - is seen as key to Cardiff's future ambitions, a fact emphasised by another man-of-the-match display in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Norwich.

The Baggies are ready to sell him, but there is likely to be severe competition for his signature and the Bluebirds are struggling to raise sufficient money.

"We know what needs to be done and what the price is, now [Cardiff owner] Sam Hammam and [chief executive] Peter Ridsdale have to do it," said Jones.

"Jason's the type of player we need if the club wants to improve, he's a big part of what we are trying to do, but you can't rely on one person."

Young defender Loovens' potential transfer from Feyenoord continues to frustrate both Jones and the Dutchman.
