Striker Wayne Gray happy to wait for U's start

Striker Wayne Gray has said he is willing to wait for his chance in the Cambridge United starting XI.

The 29-year-old is yet to start a match for the U's since agreeing a short-term contract over the summer.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "You just have to learn to be patient, I spent a lot my early career at Wimbledon on the bench.

"No footballer wants to be on the bench, but you have to understand the situation and earn the right to play."

Gray has made seven appearances from the bench so far this season scoring two goals.

He played under U's boss Martin Ling at Leyton Orient, but has struggled for fitness in recent years and was most recently with Grays.

"I've had a few serious injuries, but now I feel as fit as I did at Orient so I've just to prove I've still got the hunger and desire," he said.

Daryl Clare and Danny Wright have been paired up front in the majority of the U's matches this season.

Gray feels they have plenty of good attacking options, despite a lack of goals on the road.

"We haven't been playing badly away from home, I just think sometimes we're not getting the rub of the green and your home crowd can make a real difference," he said

"A lot of teams are more confident on their own ground so it can be hard to break them down, but games at the Abbey tend to be more open."
