Cambridge United winger Simon Russell hails Conal Platt

Platt joined the U's from Forest Green over the summer

Simon Russell believes fellow Cambridge United midfielder Conal Platt has a big future ahead of him.

The 23-year-old set up Russell to score the U's first in Tuesday's 2-2 Blue Square Bet Premier draw with Crawley at the Abbey.

Platt signed from Forest Green over the summer after two years at the New Lawn.

Russell told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "He's only young, but he's got all the attributes, he's got pace and can get past people so easily."

The U's lined-up 4-4-2 against Crawley with Russell on the left wing and Platt on the right.

Russell had not scored for the U's before Tuesday.

"I haven't scored in about two years aside from a debatable one while at York so I was delighted to get one and hopefully I can kick-on and get some more," he said.

"If I could get ten goals this season that would be brilliant and any more would be a bonus."

Newly-promoted Southport make the trip to the Abbey on Saturday with the U's yet to register their first win of the new season after two matches.

Russell knows they need a victory sooner rather than later, but has said they will allow the pressure to effect them.

"There is a slight pressure I suppose, but it's a good pressure and we'll be doing all we can to pick up three points on Saturday," he said.

"They might come and defend and try and get a draw so we've got to be aware of that."
