Cambridge United utility man Rory McAuley could be out for up to six weeks after undergoing knee surgery.
The 20-year-old suffered a slight cartilage tear during pre-season training and had the damage repaired in an operation on Wednesday.
U's boss Martin Ling told the club's website: "Rory, being a young and determined man, will try to be back as quickly as possible.
"For the timescale he'll be out I don't feel we need any added cover."
Since rising from the youth ranks McAuley's ability to play central-midfield, right-back and centre-half have made him a useful member of the squad.
He made 27 Blue Square Premier appearances for the club last season.
