Paul Carden eyes Cambridge midfield options

Cambridge United assistant manager Paul Carden has his eye on a number of attacking midfielders to help bolster the squad ahead of next season.

The 31-year-old, who features in a holding midfield role for the U's, has come up against numerous players who could fit the bill.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Attacking midfielders that I've had to mark, there's a few of them available.

"I am in full agreement that we need another experienced one in there."

With boss Martin Ling on holiday, Carden is holding the fort at the Abbey Stadium and hopes to add some new names within the next week.

"Two or three faces in for pre-season is the aim," he added.

"Hopefully this next week we'll see one or two come to fruition. If there's room to manoeuvre during pre-season we may take a few trialists in."

The former Chester player, who is United's team captain, was also able to shed more light on defender Brian Saah's new role as club captain.

"The club captain's job is in and around the dressing room, monitoring fines and making sure the dressing room is in good order," said Carden.

"When I'm not available he'll step in and be captain. Brian's a great lad, he's very disciplined within himself and he'll certainly be a good club captain.

"Hopefully the responsibility will bring out more of his ability on the pitch."

The U's have already moved to bring in striker Danny Wright, defender James Jennings and goalkeeper Danny Naisbitt ahead of the next Blue Square Bet Premier campaign.
