Higgs says money is available for new players

Bristol Rovers chairman Nick Higgs has defended the club's ambition after the 5-0 loss to Leyton Orient.

Rovers have made just one new signing in the transfer window and have spent very little of the £1m they received for striker Rickie Lambert last summer.

He told BBC Radio Bristol: "Money's been available all season to strengthen the squad. We have a wage bill higher than it's ever been at the club.

"So we can't be criticised for lacking ambition or trying to take us forward."

He continued: "These last few weeks have been incredibly busy try to bring players in.

"It hasn't happened, we're disappointed and we've got to start again."

Paul Trollope's side have won just once in their last five league games and are in ninth place, eight points off the play-offs, after their worst defeat in 18 years.

But Higgs is still optimistic that Rovers can be in contention for promotion come the end of the season.

"I think it's still a realistic goal if we can turn things around," he said.

"It's not like we're looking over our shoulder at relegation and I think we've got to take heart from that and be positive.

"It's now down to Paul (Trollope) and Lennie (Lawrence) to sit down with the team and try to get to the bottom of what's gone wrong."
