Basso has played four times this season despite being on the transfer list

Adriano Basso's career at Bristol City looks in serious doubt after he was asked to stay away from the match against Sheffield United on Saturday.

The 34-year-old keeper was originally put on the transfer list in July when he refused to sign a new contract.

And in the week he was quoted as saying we wanted to quit the club in January.

"Unless someone is 100% behind what we're doing then they're not going to be involved," manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol.

"He decided through another vehicle to tell everyone that he was available in January.

"I'll talk to Basso on Monday. I asked him to not to come to the game as I didn't think he was going to be part of it, in his head as much as well as anything else," added Johnson.

The saga surrounding Basso has been going on for several months now with the club maintaining they have continued to talk to the Brazilian in an effort to keep him at Ashton Gate.

"The chairman [Stephen Lansdown] was speaking to him as much as he could, quite extensively," said Johnson.

"It's unbelievable. Between me, the chairman and Colin Sexstone we've done everything we can to make it work.

"Unfortunately we've been coming up against a brick wall and we're not going to change those views."

And Johnson is adamant the club have not received a single offer for their former number one keeper while he has been on the transfer list.

"We promise him the minute we get it we'll let him know," he said.

"But he's also got representatives that have to try and show him they're doing something and what they're telling him with maybe something different."

Basso joined Bristol City in 2005 after spells at non-league St Albans and Woking and quickly became their first-choice keeper replacing Steve Phillips.
