Johnson led Bristol City to the Championship play-off final last season

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson has signed a new five-year contract which will keep him with the club until 2013.

The former Yeovil, Cambridge and Latvia boss joined City in September 2005 and won promotion from League One in 2007.

Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol: "This is the place to be and I'm honoured to be asked to sign a five-year deal.

"We've done a lot of work at this football club on and off the field and I just want to be a part of it going into the future."

Johnson took Bristol City to within one win of reaching the Premier League last season only to lose the play-off final 1-0 to Hull City at Wembley.

Despite that disappointment, his passion for the club is clearly as strong as ever, as is the belief that the club can continue to progress.

"As a manager I can only ask for the commitment that the board of directors give me when I'm asking for things and the club has had its success," said Johnson.

"Everybody - the board, the players, my fantastic staff and the supporters - deserves a bit of it, that's what makes me want to go long term because I am still excited about this football club, that's why I'm signing this deal."

The five-year contract ties up Johnson's future as his existing deal - a two-year extension signed in August 2007 - was due to expire in the summer of 2009.

Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown said that keeping Johnson would allow the club to continue to move forward.

"We are building something here, something quite special and I wanted to make sure that we continued that progress.

"We did a contract last year because Gary's contract was coming to an end. That contract was a good one, but I felt that I wanted that stability and continuity to make this football club move forward."
