Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown believes the signing of Crewe striker Nicky Maynard "feels absolutely right".
Lansdown has seen potential deals for Emad Moteab and Michael Mifsud fall through and told BBC Points West that he is delighted with 2.25m Maynard.
"Hopefully it's the missing link to push us into the Championship top two. We've got a tough division and we want to give it our best shot," he said.
"It's an awful lot of money but it shows how far we've come."
Earlier this week, City pulled out of a deal to sign Coventry's Mifsud due to concerns about his commitment to the club.
A few days previously the club withdrew from a 1.5m move for striker Emad Moteab from Egyptian champions Al Ahly after he played for his old club.
Lansdown is confident that he has had found a player who can boost an attack which last season yielded 34 fewer goals than Championship winners West Brom.
"It's an investment in the quality of football at Bristol City and that's the key really.
"It gives is another option up front and hopefully goals which we lacked a little bit last year," he said.
