Crewe Alexandra forward Nicky Maynard would be a good signing for Bristol City, according to former Robins striker Lee Matthews.
Crewe have accepted an offer from City for the 21-year-old, who played alongside Matthews at Gresty Road.
Matthews told BBC Radio Bristol that Maynard has ability: "I think he'll be a hit if the deal goes through.
"He's an out-and-out goalscorer, very clever around the box, great movement, he's quick and got good awareness."
Matthews agreed a switch to the Alexandra Stadium in 2006, a couple of years after leaving the West Country, and believes the ambitious Maynard would already be playing at a higher level if he had not suffered a broken leg in the first game of last season.
"He'd probably have been on the move in the last [transfer] window. It took him a few months to get back to the form he had," said Matthews.
"I think he's quite friendly with Micah Richards [of Manchester City] and a few of they boys who play at the highest level.
"I know he wants to get to that level, so hopefully he can achieve that with Bristol City."
