Brighton have given Trinidad & Tobago international midfielder Chris Birchall a contract until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old, who was signed by Albion boss Micky Adams when he was in charge at Coventry, left the Midlands club by mutual consent in January.

Adams told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "We feel Chris has earned an opportunity to show us he deserves a long-term contract.

"Once he is fully fit, we are sure he will be a real asset to the squad."

Speaking before the deal was announced, Birchall said: "I've played under him [Adams] before at Coventry after he signed me from Port Vale.

"I like his man-management, I like coming into training every day and that is something I have not felt for a couple of years since Micky left Coventry."
