Lynch is contracted to Brighton until the summer of 2010
Brighton boss Micky Adams says Joel Lynch asked to be left out of his team that lost to Walsall on Saturday.
With Colin Hawkins injured, Adams told Lynch he would play immmediately after the draw with Yeovil on 13 September.
But the Albion boss told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "On the Monday he said he wasn't in the right frame of mind. What can I do? I have to rule him out."
"To pick him would be insulting to the rest of the players and supporters. It's disappointing to hear."
Lynch handed in a transfer request in August but, after playing against Northampton on 2 September, he appeared to back track and commit himself to the Seagulls.
Adams says he may now allow the centre back to leave on a short term basis, adding: "There is a possibility he could go out on loan, but that will be down to whatever club declares an interest.
