Shroot ends loan spell at Walsall

Winger Robin Shroot has ended his loan at Walsall and returned to Birmingham City a week early.

Shroot, 21, joined the Saddlers for a month on 6 March but has been frustrated by a lack of opportunities at the Banks's Stadium.

He made five substitute appearances but did not feature in the starting XI.

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings told BBC WM: "Robin was disappointed he hadn't started any games but our wide-men have been playing well."

Shroot was already a Northern Ireland under-21 international when he joined Birmingham from non-league Harrow Borough in January 2009.

He made his senior debut for Blues in the FA Cup defeat by Wolves but was allowed to join Walsall to gain more first-team experience.

I thanked Alex for letting Robin come across to us and hopefully it'll make him a better player for the involvement and contribution that he made

Hutchings insists Birmingham boss Alex McLeish knew that Shroot would only be a member of his squad.

"I said to Alex that Robin would only be on the bench but I would always get him on," Hutchings said. "Unless there was a lapse in form in our wide-men, then he would start.

"But that didn't materialise and he became very frustrated, so Alex said if that was the case he would take him back.

"I thanked Alex for letting Robin come across to us and hopefully it'll make him a better player for the involvement and contribution that he made to this football club."
