Heywood failed to make a single first-team appearance at Barrow

Blue Square Bet Premier side Barrow have confirmed that defender Matt Heywood has left the club.

Heywood, 31, was released without making a single first-team appearance at Holker Street following his summer free transfer to the Bluebirds.

"There was a breach of contract. It's a signing that didn't work out for us," vice chairman Tony Keen told the North West Evening Mail.

"Through the legal system we have now closed it as an issue."

Heywood has made 299 league appearances for a string of clubs including Brentford, Swindon Town and Grimsby Town.
