Barrow sign ex-Chester midfielder James Owen

Barrow

Barrow have agreed terms with former Chester City midfielder James Owen, 19, until the end of the season.

The former Wales Under-17 international is a central midfielder who left the Deva Stadium last month.

"He's been training with us for two weeks now and has done really well" Barrow manager Dave Bayliss told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"It might be a little too soon to throw him straight in but he is definitely one for the future."

Owen was a product of Chester City's youth system and made his debut for the club as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat at Port Vale in January 2009.

He made his first start for the club in a 1-0 win at Accrington Stanley in April of that year.

He made seven appearances during his first season in professional football as Chester were relegated from the Football League.

Owen's contract was cancelled by mutual consent last month as the financial crisis at Chester worsened.

After leaving the Deva Stadium, Caernarfon-born Owen joined Blue Square Premier rivals Wrexham on trial where he scored in a 3-2 friendly win over Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton.

"He's impressed us," Bayliss said. "With all these games coming up it is important we bolster our squad and get some extra bodies in."
