Barnsley manager Mark Robins says they are unlikely to keep hold of on-loan defender Paul McShane when his two-month deal ends on 16 April.
The Hull City man was brought in during February as cover for Stephen Foster who has now returned to the squad.
Robins told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I've looked at that and I'll keep pushing but I don't think we'll be able to."
The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international has played seven times for the Tykes during his loan.
