Ritchie eager to commit to Tykes

Ritchie will start contract talks with Barnsley this week
Barnsley manager Andy Ritchie is keen to sort out his future at Oakwell after the Tykes rejected an approach for him from Sheffield Wednesday this week.

Ritchie told BBC Sport: "Barnsley have told them they cannot speak to me and I respect that.

"I would like to get on with sorting out a new contract here now.

"It runs out at the end of the season and the chairman Gordon Shepherd would like to get me on a longer deal so we will be talking for the next few days."

The former Manchester United, Leeds and Oldham striker spent more than three years in charge of the Latics in his first managerial job between 1998 and 2001.

Ritchie has been at Oakwell on a permanent basis since May 2005 after two months as caretaker boss.

And he guided Barnsley to promotion last term in his first full season in charge.

Ritchie added: "I was very flattered that Wednesday have noticed what I am doing.

"It is a bit of an ego boost for myself because it is always nice to be patted on the back. As a coach it is nice to get plaudits - and I just see it as that."
