Barnsley have appointed Andy Ritchie as their new manager after a successful caretaker reign. Former Oldham manager Ritchie, 44, took over from Paul Hart in March, won the manager-of-the-month award immediately and lost only two of the last 11 games.
"Andy has respect not only here at Oakwell but also throughout football," said a statement from the Barnsley board on the club's website.
Ritchie will not make any changes to his backroom team, the club said.
Former Nottingham Forest boss Hart parted company with the Oakwell side after just two wins in 13 league matches.
Ritchie was already working at the club as Academy boss, where he had moved from a similar position at Leeds in 2004.
He stepped up as caretaker and, according to the board's statement, "earned the utmost respect of the playing staff".
Ritchie made his name as a player at Manchester United and also had spells with Brighton and Leeds before switching to Oldham, where he enjoyed an enormously popular two spells either side of a stint at Scarborough.
In May 1998 he became player-manager at Boundary Park and had a decent spell in charge before the job at Leeds came up.
