Arsenal's fantastic run

The Premiership season may be new but some things, evidently, never change.

The opening weekend is always played out in blistering sunshine, refereeing controversies dominate the back page - and Arsenal keep on breaking records.

Sunday's 2-0 win over Birmingham saw the Gunners continue their remarkable record-breaking run.

They had eclipsed Manchester United's 12-match winning streak, set between March and August 2000, at the end of last season.

But by winning a 14th consecutive match on Sunday, they eclipsed:

• Tottenham (April 1960-October 1960)

• Sunderland (November 1891-April 1892)

• Preston (October 1891-March 1892)

It was also the 40th successive match in which Arsenal have scored, which moves them to equal fourth in the all-time list.

Long-suffering Manchester City fans may be surprised to learn their club fills the top two positions in this particular chart - but if Arsenal score in their next five games they will be number one.

Unbeaten record next?

The Gunners are also inching ever closer to Manchester United's longest unbeaten sequence in the Premiership.

The Red Devils went 29 Premiership games unbeaten between December 1998 and September 1999.

But Arsenal have notched up 22 matches since their last Premiership defeat, just seven away from the record.

This is an Arsenal team growing used to topping tables - and few would bet against them moving up a few places in the record lists before too long.
