| Thursday, 16 January, 2003, 21:07 GMT United release McGowne and Venetis ![]() Venetis (left) could rejoin former boss Alex Smith Dundee United have parted company with Kevin McGowne and Tassos Venetis. Greek Venetis has followed former United manager Alex Smith to Ross County having failed to live up to his promise after 62 appearances in nearly three years on Tayside. Partick Thistle boss John Lambie is chasing three additions to his squad and it looks like veteran defender McGowne will be the first to arrive at Firhill. United announced on Thursday that they had come to an "amicable agreement" with McGowne and 22-year-old midfielder Venetis that allowed both players to leave the club with immediate effect. Thistle lost Daniele Chiarini to United when the transfer window opened, having been unable to match the Italian defender's wage demands. McGowne seems likely to head in the opposite direction six months after moving to Tannadice from Kilmarnock.
McGowne could be joined in Glasgow by what Thistle's website describes as "an English-based Scot whose name has not yet been mentioned in the media". Veteran Hibernian midfielder Matthias Jack is believed to be a target, having fallen out of favour with boss Bobby Williamson. Lambie hopes to add to his squad before their winter training camp in Blackpool next week but has already pulled out of attempts to sign St Mirren left wing-back Ian Ross and Ayr United left-back Paul Lovering. Both are free agents in the summer, but Thistle were unwilling to match the four-figure weekly wages they currently receive from their First Division clubs. Thistle are also giving a trial to Magnus Samuelsson of Finnish side FC Lahti but have not yet decided whether the 31-year-old defender is worth a deal. Meanwhile, 25-year-old former Stirling Albion defender David McCallum is attracting some interest. McCallum was told by Thistle that he could find a new club along with veteran midfielder Jamie Dolan, while defender Alan McDermott was not deemed worthy of a new deal at Firhill. Veteran midfielder Chic Charnley has had his contract extended until the end of the season, despite not featuring in any Under-21 games prior to the break due to injury. | See also: 11 Feb 03 | Partick Thistle 10 Jan 03 | Dundee Utd Top Scot Prem stories now: Links to more Scot Prem stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
