By Keir Murray

1720: Well, that's all from me today and from the BBC Sport Scotland online team for the football season on the live text front. Thanks for your company and contributions today and throughout the campaign. Have a great night, especially if you are a United or County fan. You all deserve to celebrate. Bye!

1718: And hawick on My Sport also points out that "Tangerine Trees runs in the 8.10 at Doncaster tonight". Hmmm. It could be an omen. Or you could lose some money...

My Sport
Wise words from hawick on My Sport: "County, you've had a great journey and so many positives; well done too for your season. Now don't forget your achievements and use it as a platform for promotion next season."

1712: A good day, too, for Craig Brown's Motherwell. They are in the Europa League, thanks to United's win.

1711: "As the jubilant players salute their followers to Hampden, the United fans are celebrating with a sing-along to Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone. A few are struggling with the higher notes but that is not spoiling any of the fun. The County fans are staying behind to salute their team, which is great to see." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat

1711: David Goodwillie is stuck for words: "You can see what it means to the boys. I'm speechless," he tells BBC Radio Scotland.

1709: "Love is in the Air" is belted out by the ecstatic United fans.

1707: Well, it's clear - my pal Andy Carruthers' lucky 1980s United socks - moth-eaten, bobbled - have proved to be the difference between the sides. It really had nothing to do with Craig Conway's man-of-the-match performance.

1706: The United Stephen Thompson chairman says it will take a while for the Cup win to sink in. He tells BBC Radio Scotland that he would love it if some of the fans who are at Hampden today would come along to Tannadice every other week.

1704: You have to feel for the Staggies - what a Cup run, what a fairytale story to even reach the final, and what a superb support.

1703: The Terrors are bouncing around the temporary stage on the pitch as the tangerine confetti flutters down from on high.

1701: Peter Houston holds the trophy aloft. He is utterly beaming.

Champagne moment
1700: Now it's United's turn. Andy Webster and Lee Wilkie head up the Hampden steps and lift the old trophy. The United fans go crazy.

1658: Ross County pick up their medals. Well done to them.

1655: The County players are devastated. A few are in tears. I'm sure when the dust settles they will look back on their achievement with pride.

1654: A terrific occasion for both sides, even if it took a while for the game to get going. United win the Cup for only the second time in their history.

Full time
1652: And there it is. United are the Active Nation Scottish Cup champions.
Dundee United 3-0 Ross County

1652: The Terrors fans are whistling, urging Dougie MacDonald to blow the final whistle.

1651: Craig Conway blasts from 14 yards but Michael McGovern makes a strong save to deny the United man his hat-trick.

1648: United chairman Stephen Thompson surveys the scene at Hampden. He must be thrilled to bits.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Ross County are done. Morgaro Gomis collects Jon Daly's flick-on and crosses for Craig Conway, who chests the ball down and sweeps the ball home in clinical fashion.

GOAL! Dundee United 3-0 Ross County (Craig Conway)

1644: David Robertson runs the ball into the corner to kill a bit of time. It's a frustrating end to the game for the Staggies.

1642: Ah, it's a brutal game, football. We've just seen some shots of the long-faced County fans.

1641: David Robertson is on for goalscorer David Goodwillie, while for County Martin Scott makes way for Garry Wood.

1640: The United fans are enjoying this now. County need to get something soon or their Cup dream is over.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
A throw-in at the halfway line is flicked on by the head of David Goodwillie and Craig Conway is off and running. He proves to be too fast for the County defence and he slips the ball under Michael McGovern for a well-taken goal.

GOAL! Dundee United 2-0 Ross County (Craig Conway)

1634: "Poor Michael McGovern made a proper horlicks of his headed clearance and the worst of it is that the ball looked like reaching him comfortably if he'd stayed within the confines of his penalty area. Buoyed by the goal, the United fans are in fine voice, while it's all gone quiet in the County section." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden with his view of United's opener

1633: United's Mihael Kovacevic foolishly gives away a foul a few yards from the touchline, with Iain Vigurs heading away from goal. The free-kick comes to nothing, however.

Yellow card
1632: Morgaro Gomis goes into Dougie McDonald's book for a late challenge in the middle of the pitch.

1630: County have to dig deep to find the energy to haul themselves back into this match in the last 19 minutes.

1627: Martin Scott opens up his foot to try to curl an effort beyond Dusan Pernis - the first time I've mentioned the United keeper - but it's a comfortable save.

1625: You have to feel for Michael McGovern. It looked like he was caught in two minds - to catch the ball and risk a foul if it's outside his box, or head it clear? But Goodwillie's finish was superb - one touch to control it and another to despatch it into the net as three County defenders raced back in vain.

1623: The Ross County defence are under intense pressure as United go for a second.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Michael McGovern at the edge of County's box mis-hits his clearance and the ball falls for David Goodwillie who hits a beautiful lob into the net.

GOAL! Dundee United 1-0 Ross County (David Goodwillie)

1614: Danny Swanson heads weakly and wide from Morgaro Gomis's cross from the left. In fairness to the United midfielder, he had to go backwards to reach the ball.

1612: Derek Adams makes a substitution for Ross County. Steven Craig makes way for Paul Lawson.

1611: Those silky United tops? I remember them well. My pal had one but his red setter kept jumping up on him and catching the fine fabric in its claws. He ended up looking like he'd been marked by Aberdeen's Doug Rougvie.

1609: "Well, with relatively little goalmouth action to discuss, it gives me the chance to tell you that I've seen some great retro tops on display from the Arab contingent. The best are those impossibly silky numbers once sported by Paul Sturrock and Davie Dodds." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat gives Trinny & Susannah a run for their money.

1608: But United go again with Craig Conway, who gets a shot at goal despite being the meat in a beefy United player sandwich.

1607: Panic stations there for Ross County but big Alex Keddie eventually controls a bouncing ball in the box and clears the danger.

1605: United look like they have had a stern talking-to at half-time.

1602: Captain Brittain leads the County players back on to the Hampden pitch.

1600: "The Active Nation dance troupe are back with a Scottish Cup 'dance-off'. There are some serious moves being busted out there on the pitch. The players could do with emulating some of the fancy footwork on display." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden

1558: "The worst Scottish Cup final since 1987" is the verdict of BBC Scotland's Chick Young. This is keeping the great man away from cruising on his wee boat on the Firth of Clyde!

1556: From Graeme by text on 80295: "Ross County look like they have no intention of keeping the ball for more than a touch. So disappointing and a bad advert."

1554: It's set up for an amazing second half, isn't it? I know, I sound desperate now...

Half time
Daly's effort is the last of the opening period. Things picked up in the last 10 minutes of the half after scrappy play.
Dundee United 0-0 Ross County

1547: And Jon Daly flicks a header at goal, but the burly Irishman's effort is hit too directly at the County number one.

1545: It's one-way traffic. David Goodwillie breaks from deep to get on the end of a long ball but instead of lobbing the bouncing ball over Michael McGovern he tries to control it and the chance is gone, thanks to Alex Keddie's pressure.

1544: A nice bit of skill in the box by Craig Conway gives United a corner. The ball is whipped in and Andy Webster heads it off the post, but the United captain is penalised for pushing.

1542: Craig Conway's right-footed in-swinging free-kick curls harmlessly into the arms of County's Michael McGovern.

From Kris in Edinburgh by text on 80295: "The ball has seen more action on the touchline at Hampden than on the pitch! I've lost track of how many throw-ins there have been!"

1540: "County played a lot of neat and patient possession in their semi-final win over Celtic. But, with United pressing high up the pitch and playing at such a whirlwind tempo, there has been little opportunity for the Highlanders to settle into the game. United appear content to thump long balls into the channels, which hasn't made for thrilling viewing so far." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden

1539: "Captain Richard Brittain"? Why, he sounds like a World War Two heroic pilot!

1538: And the Tangerines follow that chance with an attacking throw-in by Garry Kenneth, which bounces like a wayward beachball in the County box. Captain Richard Brittain heads clear.

1536: Alex Keddie makes a phenomenal saving tackle to prevent Danny Swanson putting United ahead. Conway had raced from his own half, leaving a trail of blue jerseys in his wake, and had battered a shot at Michael McGovern's goal.

From Larry in Glasgow by text on 80295: "Is it just me or is Bastian Schweinsteiger wearing the number four shirt for County?"

My Sport
The Lunatic Fringe on My Sport: "Any thoughts of a classic cup-final with both teams going for it and lots of goals are disappearing fast. There's more action on the terraces than on the pitch."

1530: Looking at pictures coming in from the FA Cup final at Wembley. The pitch looks much less lush than Hampden's.

1529: Scott Boyd makes a timely intervention in the County penalty box, cutting out a dangerous ball across the goal as United turn the screw.

1527: "Ross County aren't looking comfortable in possession at the moment." BBC Radio Scotland pundit Murdo MacLeod

1525: Help us out here, please. We have received an anonymous text to 80295: "Who is the top scorer in the competition and can they be beaten today if they are not a player of County or United? Cheers." We're thinking it's Celtic's Robbie Keane. David Goodwillie has scored three times in the Cup so far this season.

1524: From the resultant free-kick, United have their best chance of the match, but man-mountain Garry Kenneth heads over the bar.

Yellow card
1523: Ouch! A "robust" challenge from the Highlanders' Gary Miller, scything United striker David Goodwillie.

1522: "The United fans came here for a party but they're a little quiet at the moment." BBC Radio Scotland pundit Billy Dodds

1520: The game's a bit scrappy at the minute. There's a whole lot of hoofing the ball up the park from the defences. I guess no-one wants to make a mistake that allows a striker in on goal.

1518: Quick question: have you ever seen United's attacking midfielder Craig Conway and Joaquin Phoenix in the same room? Hmm, strange, eh? Conway was brilliant in Walk the Line.

1517: "The United fans got to see that penalty claim again, courtesy of the big screens at either end of the stadium. They must be disappointed not to have been awarded a spot-kick but that hasn't dampened the party atmosphere." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat on United's penalty appeal

1515: Morgaro Gomis fouls County's Martin Scott as he chases back from midfield.

1512: "I think the referee called it right there." BBC Radio Scotland pundit Murdo MacLeod also reckons Dougie MacDonald got his first big decision correct.

1511: United's Danny Swanson goes down in the box and claims for a penalty. The ref decides he ran straight into Alex Keddie. Correct, in my opinion.

1510: For what it's worth, I'm going to predict a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, with the Terrors winning it in extra-time. What do you reckon?

1508: Garry Kenneth's long throw-in into the County box is cleared and Michael Gardyne breaks.

1507: "There are an awful lot of balloons floating around inside the national stadium, with several on the pitch. Let's hope we don't get a Pepe Reina at Sunderland moment." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden

1505: A bit of adrenaline coursing through the veins, methinks, as Richard Brittain's free-kick is over-hit and goes out for a goal-kick.

1503: A bright start by County, with more players in dark blue getting an early touch.

1501: The Hampden pitch is basked in glorious sunshine and the surface looks terrific. One complaint, though: the groundsman could surely have been a bit more creative with his lawnmower. A lion and stag carefully mown into the turf wouldn't have gone amiss. More gardening top tips to follow...(!)

1500: We're almost off. The captains Andy Webster and Richard Brittain are swapping pleasantries, we assume, in the centre circle. It's the perfect sporting spectacle. Here we go!

1458: "The United fans are singing along en-masse to Love Is In The Air - the 1977 disco classic from John Paul Young - they are giving it laldy. Magnificent. The stadium is bouncing..." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden

1457: Ross County have scored 24 goals so far in this year's tournament. Nine of those were rattled in against Stirling Albion.

1456: The teams are in the tunnel. Referee Dougie McDonald looks rather tense. Here they come!

1454: Legendary United manager Jim McLean has decided to stay away from the final today in case he jinxes his former team. Mr McLean has too many painful experiences of losing cup finals. United have lost seven in all.

1453: "The players are heading back up the tunnel for one last word from the managers. The stadium is ablaze with tangerine, while the blue and white flags are fluttering in the County section. There is now a procession of kids from all across Scotland, representing each of previous winners of the tournament, including long-gone heroes from Renton, Vale of Leven, Third Lanark and St Bernard's." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden.

1451: Anonymous text to 80295: "Correction to 1353, Dingwall is 12 miles from Inverness and is the county town of Ross-shire, hence the name Ross County." This is why we love our intelligent website visitors. Thanks!

1449: What a great sight at Hampden. Yes, it is sunny! Hooray! And it's a splendid sea of tangerine and navy blue. Ten minutes until kick-off.

1444: Mr Chick "Air Miles" Young has spied something at Hampden that has tickled his fancy - a banner for the Monaco Dundee United Supporters Club. My esteemed colleague will have an application form off to them by half-time.

1439: "We have blue skies overhead and we're being treated to some ear-bleeding techno as the Active Nation dance troupe go through their paces. The players are out on the pitch, doing that strange backwards running stuff and working on one-touch routines. The Scottish Power pipe band are up next..." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat could do with some ear muffs at Hampden

1435: And here are the 11 Staggies and five subs with United in their sights: McGovern, Miller, Morrison, Scott, Boyd, Keddie, Gardyne, Craig, Brittain, Vigurs, Barrowman. Subs: Malin, Kettlewell, Lawson, Di Giacomo, Wood

1432: That looks like a very strong side in tangerine, I must say. No place in the squad for strikers Damian Casalinuovo or Francisco Sandaza. What a rotten moment that must be, to hear you are not in the starting 11 or on the subs bench.

1430: OK, here goes with the team news for Dundee United: Pernis, Dillon, Webster, Kenneth, Kovacevic, Conway, Swanson, Buaben, Gomis, Daly, Goodwillie. Subs: Banks, Watson, Robertson, Robertson, Cadamarteri

1427: What a terrific gesture by United boss Peter Houston to hand the honour of leading the team out on to the pitch to former captain Lee Wilkie. The big fella has had to call a premature end to his career because of a persistent knee problem.

1424: If you are outside the UK, it's a pleasure to have your company for the live text commentary. Thanks for joining us here at BBC Scotland. No doubt there are ex-pat Terrors and Staggies around the globe with fingers crossed that their internet connection doesn't pack in on them.

1422: I hope you are able to follow the match in some way. If you are in the UK, you can watch the game on BBC One Scotland or listen on the transistor radio or online. If you are outside Scotland but still in the UK and you have a digital telly, you can got the "high numbers" (technical term") with your remote control to pick up the match.

My Sport
mountainview-motel on My Sport: "Good morning from Canada. Just sat down to the 'Family final' with my bowl of cereal and the first comment I read is about Lorraine Kelly's tangerine underwear! Way to put a guy off his brekkie." Sorry, mountainview.

1417: That formation gives us all an insight into the 34-year-old manager's ambitious outlook. Mind you, if United play at their best, you would expect County to be pinned back in their own half in which case it might be more like a block of navy blue across the 18-yard line.

1415: Derek Adams has just announced that he is setting his Ross County team out in an attacking 4-3-3 formation, the same as when they beat Celtic 2-0 in the semi-final.

1412: If you're wanting a glimpse into the pre-match preparations of the United captain, have a read at Andy Webster's Cup final diary.

My Sport
DiegoforUtd on My Sport: "Hoping for a good open match today! Makes a nice change having a final with neither Old Firm team involved!"

1404: "Former Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith is here doing some television work for a rival broadcaster. A few weeks ago he was rubbing shoulders with Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter, now he's sharing a pre-match meal with the likes of me. His son, Grant, is in the County squad but won't be involved today. Something about a daft SFA Under-21 rule, apparently..." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden

1400: I'm hoping my good friend Andrew Carruthers and his travelling party heading down from Pitlochry have made it through the roadworks on the road south in time. Andrew is wearing his lucky tangerine socks so I can say with confidence that it's game, set and match - United will win. These sorry socks of his have been worn with success through semi-finals, play-offs, exams and job interviews.

1357: There's a photo of a terrific sign in all today's papers. It has been positioned at the roadside on the way out of Dingwall and it reads "Last one out turn the lights off".

1353: In case you don't know, Ross County play in Dingwall, about 20 miles from Inverness. The population is 5,000 and yet they have sold 20,000 tickets for today's big game. However, as the club's president Roy McGregor explained to BBC 5 Live listeners this morning, there are 100,000 people within about 15 miles of Dingwall.

1348: It's incredible to think that Ross County have progressed from the Highland League, then worked their way up the Scottish Football Leagues and now find themselves in the Scottish Cup final. As the lad Moffat out at Hampden remarked the other day, "I wonder who County were playing the night United were giving Barcelona the run-around under Jim McLean."

From Peter by text on 80295: "I'm in East Kilbride and have just hung out the washing. A dry and sunny afternoon now guaranteed." This is the sort of news we love to hear.

1344: "A trickle of fans have made their way into the stadium and the players are out on the pitch sizing up the Hampden turf. The United squad look dandy in light grey suits, with button-hole orange flowers, while the County players are razor sharp in a sombre navy blue - no softy flowers for the Highlanders." BBC Scotland's Colin Moffat at Hampden

1342: We're an hour and a quarter away from kick-off. This is when Peter Houston and Derek Adams, the respective managers of United and County, will be going round the players for a final word. Some of the players will be silent, some will be upbeat, some will be hiding in the changing room latrines...

1338: Super United fan Lorraine Kelly tells BBC Radio Scotland listeners that she is wearing her special tangerine underwear to Hampden today, and she is wearing tangerine high heels too. The only thing is, if United win the Cup, Lorraine won't be allowed to run on to the pitch with those killer heels on.

1335: Ah, Cup final day. It's almost sunny at Hampden. Hopefully by kick-off the sun will be splitting the trees. It's one of those things in Scottish football - it should always be sunny on Scottish Cup final day.

1330: Welcome to the live text commentary of the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park. You won't miss a kick of the ball as Dundee United take on Ross County in the 125th final of the famous old Cup competition. The match is live on BBC One Scotland's Sportscene, on Radio Scotland's Sportsound, and here online and on mobile we'll be bringing you a blow-by-blow account of events on the south side of Glasgow. My colleague Colin Moffat is in position at the national stadium, laptop at the ready.
