Weir's way for Rangers

Rangers captain David Weir

By David McDaid, BBC Scotland at Hampden

By rights, on sun-drenched days, David Weir should be lying back on a deck-chair in his garden, bottle of beer in hand, maybe tending to a few sausages on his barbecue.

As it was, he was strolling around a park in Glasgow's south side, still catching the rays, but with a football match raging around him and 32,000 people watching on.

He would probably have broken more sweat by the side of the barbecue.

But here he was, two weeks shy of his 39th birthday, playing his 41st match of the season - the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park.

It was not the most inspiring 90 minutes. The St Mirren fans turned up in good numbers, probably more in hope than expectation.

But with barely a minute on the clock those hopes evaporated in the Hampden heat as Andrius Velicka reacted quickest to prod in the opener.

The Saints did recover in the first period, but a few nice passes and a Stephen Thomson effort from distance aside, they posed little threat.

Together with Madjid Bougherra, new Rangers captain Weir nullified the combined threats of St Mirren strikers Billy Mehmet and Dennis Wyness; and then substitute Jim Hamilton.

Kris Boyd - with his 100th goal for the club - and Kenny Miller added to the score sheet to dump St Mirren 3-0 and send Rangers to the Scottish Cup final.

"Madjid and I have struck up a decent partnership I think," the softly-spoken defender told BBC Scotland. "It's nice to keep a clean sheet - that's the most important thing. And it's something we're working to maintain."

Weir has held the Scottish Cup aloft twice already - first with Hearts in 1998, and last year with Rangers.

But the next time he does so could be different. The next time he could be leading the team up the steps on 30 May.

After the semi-final win, in the astro-turf warm-up zone in the bowels of the national stadium, just like on the pitch, Weir's pulse barely quickens at the prospect of captaining the team to world football's second-oldest trophy.

In fact, he scarcely wants to acknowledge it.

"Hopefully I will be captain," he said. "But you never count your chickens. A lot can happen between now and then, but if that is the case I'll be delighted."

Weir admits he would like to face his hometown club Falkirk in the final. He played for the Bairns and is still good friends with the management team there.

But, whether Falkirk or Dunfermline provide the opposition, will captaining Rangers in the final be a career highlight?

"It depends," he said. "If we win it it'll be right up there. If we don't, it'll be down at the bottom. So it's up to us."

Weir, with his hound-dog looks is unflappable, and unexcitable. Perhaps his laid-back nature is a factor in his career longevity.

And maybe this quality is why he has become one of the first names on manager Walter Smith's team sheet, since arriving at Ibrox two years ago initially on a six-month stop-gap deal.

But, with his current deal up in the summer, who knows if the final will be Weir's last match in a Rangers shirt?

At 39-years-of-age he would surely claim some sort of record as one of the oldest players to captain a Scottish Cup final team, certainly in the modern era.

"I'm sure I've got a few of those records!" he said wryly. "But whether I'm 39, 29 or 19, if I'm the captain it'll be a great honour and I'll be delighted.

"Obviously I'd rather Barry Ferguson was here and he was the captain, but that's happened now so we can't look back," he said in reference to the recently deposed Ibrox skipper.

"But you never know, Barry might be back in the team by then.

"Anyway I'm really enjoying the role, it's a big honour and something I'm proud of, so I'm trying to make the most of it."
