Steve Evans loses New Saints captaincy after court case

Former Wrexham and Wales defender Evans won seven caps for his country

Former Welsh international Steve Evans has been fined and stripped of The New Saints' captaincy following his court appearance for a public order offence.

Defender Evans was also given extra work in the club's community programme.

"While Steve was deeply sorry, the directors take this very seriously," said club owner Mike Harris.

Mold magistrates had fined Evans £200 after he admitted an offence reported to involve urinating in the street on a night out in his home town, Wrexham.

Evans, who won seven caps for Wales, said: "I love the club and would like to apologise for my actions."

After last week's hearing, The New Saints moved quickly to suspend the 31-year-old who has made 190 Welsh Premier appearances in two spells with Saints, pending a disciplinary hearing at the club.

But he rejoined his team-mates for Saturday's 6-1 Welsh Premier League win against Haverfordwest.

"The directors have heavily fined him in accordance with Welsh FA regulations, given him extensive community responsibilities within the club, and removed him from the position of team captain," Harris confirmed to BBC Radio Shropshire.

"The club takes matters of this kind very seriously and, whilst Steve was deeply sorry for the events that took place, it was important for the club to act in the best interest of the club, its supporters and stakeholders.

"The matter is now closed."
