Toner latest to leave New Saints

Toner played with TNS for 10 years

The New Saints have continued their clear-out by releasing the club's record goalscorer, John Toner.

Fifth in the Welsh Premier's all-time scorers list, the 32-year-old hit 112 goals from 260 league appearances (79 as substitute) for the Saints.

Toner was the side's longest-serving current player, having joined TNS back in 1999.

The former Liverpool trainee won four Welsh Premier titles with the club, and made 14 appearances in Europe.

Toner started his Welsh Premier career with Cemaes Bay before scoring 38 goals from 49 games for Conwy United.

He then moved to TNS and played in the side that won the league title for the first time, going on to lift three further championship medals under manager and former strike partner Ken McKenna.

Toner also played in the Saints sides that won the Welsh Cup, League Cup and FAW Premier Cup and made 14 appearances in Europe, scoring in the club's first-ever Champions League tie against Estonia's Levadia Maardu.

He scored 18 league goals this season, including his 150th Welsh Premier goal against Caersws.

Toner is the fifth player to be released by boss Andy Cale. He follows former Telford players Alfie Carter and Duane Courtney, along with John Leah and Robbie Williams in leaving Park Hall.

Carter joined TNS in August 2005, scoring 27 goals in his four-season spell while defender Duane Courtney arrived from Burnley in 2006.

Saints' final game is at home to Airbus UK on Saturday, kick-off 1430 BST.

They will finish in third spot and qualify for next season's Europa League.
