Wing Kevin Cooper was released by Cardiff City last season
Newport County have signed former Cardiff City wing Kevin Cooper.
The 33-year-old was released by Chesterfield in April and County manager Dean Holdsworth has swooped to sign his former Wimbledon team-mate.
"I am at a stage in my career when I am looking for new challenges and Dean sold Newport County to me," Cooper told the County website.
"I was impressed by the ambition that he and the board have, I think the club are going places."
Cooper joined Cardiff in July 2005 from Wolves, also having loan spells at Yeovil, Walsall and Tranmere before being released from Ninian Park last February.
Chesterfield then offered Cooper a short-term deal but he only made seven first-team appearances for the Spireites in the second half of last season.
However, Holdsworth is certain that Cooper has plenty to offer at Spytty Park as Newport seek promotion from the Blue Square Conference South.
"Kevin brings a wealth of experience and quality to this football club," Holdsworth added.
"I am looking for him to lead from the front and I'm sure that after two-to-three weeks of speaking to him he still has the fire in his belly to be the best player in the league.
"He is a great lad and he will fit in with the squad really well."
